The idea of doing a PhD came from my supervisor who was a senior lecturer at Ajou University in South Korea. He mentioned the opportunity of applying for several scholarships, gave an idea of what I can explore for my research and in such way inspired me tremendously to look forward to continuing my studies. After completing my masters of energy science and policy I realised that if I want to start off my career with something serious, I need further qualifications and more expert knowledge than I possessed. My masters gave me a feel of the field I wanted to be in but didn’t satisfy the yearning for something deeper. Thank God, I received a partial scholarship from Atlantic International University (AIU) to study a PhD in sustainable energy engineering. My first months of the PhD program at the university made me realise that my life was to change dramatically, and that doing PhD was something completely different to what I had experienced during my master’s programme. My experiences thus far have been amazing. I have learned and experienced so many new things in such a short period of time. Up to now, I am still discovering all the opportunities that university offers me. AIU has been a very welcoming place, and from day one. I would say I felt at home. The PhD programme has made me realize how every action we take is related to forces. This is probably the best part of AIU. The University has introduced to me new and challenging concepts that have changed my view of the world. Although the final year bared a lot of responsibility, I have enjoyed it much more than the previous years. First, I feel more confident in the field of sustainable energy Engineering. I have gained a deeper knowledge of my research topics, and generally feel optimistic about finishing my PhD degree on time. I must confess that my course tutors and advisors have had more involvement in what I have been doing in terms of advice, feedback, grading of topics, research papers, thesis proposal, and the final thesis. I feel positive about the overall PhD experience at AIU. Being in the University among people having similar interests has been a fulfilling environment. Now that I am approaching the end of a long and difficult PhD journey, I start to realise how valuable it will be for my future. I am happy I chose to do a PhD and I still believe Atlantic International University was a good choice for me. Best Regards, Byaruhanga Stephen Rwaheru
